Kelly K. Chaves is a doctoral candidate at the University of New Brunswick (Canada). Her thesis, entitled "'Savagery' and the Sea: Indigenous People in the Royal Navy and the British Merchant Service, 1700-1776", explores the participation of Native Americans in the maritime world. Her work has appeared in several journals, including Aboriginal History, The Great Circle, The Northern Mariner, and The Historian. She also contributed entries in The Oxford Encyclopedia of Maritime History, The Encyclopedia of US Indian Policy and Law, and The Encyclopedia of the US Justice System.
